the act of framing depicts the image. everything inside a white cube becomes a piece of art &&
likewise everything inside the fence of the frame becomes an image.
the scanner is working, its scanning its front. the surface of the scanner as the anti-image,
the image is digitised, transformed, rasterised, uniformed. gazing at the image, this image
is gazing back.

Technically Lightspeed is a turning table, having a projector and a
computer and a videocamera rotating on it. The videocamera continuously
scans one vertical line in the room, and the computer builds consequtive
lines into an image sliding across the projection. The camera and the
projector are aligned so that the line being scanned is at the vertical
edge of the projection, hence feeding an image of the space back to the
space. Because the rotation of the platform is synchronised with the
image, what is being scanned is displayed exactly in the same location.
Only what moves is seen. Because movement is recorded in time axis,
people in the room leave traces of themselves, their pasts, into the
walls for an extended moment, being swiped off with the next revolution
of scanning.

• the abyss

a scanner is framed an hung on a gallery wall like a old master. everything between the quadruple
of a frame (the four sides) is meant to become an image. by replacing the space in between with
a scanner, uninterrupted scanning, the relation of viewer and viewed is perverted. the image (the scanner
is in possesion of a gaze constantly looking outside the picture frame, but the images this looking
produces are not stored.
